Mauna Kea — Panorama Toward Mauna Loa (United States)

From near the summit of Mauna Kea, a red cinder cone rises out of a field of broken lava rock, and beyond it Mauna Loa's vast shield floats above a sea of cloud, calm and immense. At this altitude the air is thin and the light impossibly clear — a view usually reserved for astronomers and hikers. The camera belongs to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which keeps a permanent eye on both giants and, in the process, holds open one of the most sweeping views in the Pacific.
