A full panorama of the summit platform of Cerro Paranal, 2,635 metres up in Chile's Atacama Desert: the four silver enclosures of the Very Large Telescope sit like dice on the pale concrete, under a cobalt sky so dry it shades toward black. Desert ridges run to the horizon, and off to one side the Pacific's sea of clouds spreads out below the mountain. This window is offered by ESO, the European Southern Observatory, from the summit where it scans some of the purest sky on Earth — the image refreshes periodically rather than live, like a slow astronomical breath.
